Watching the swifts

Hazel and her entourage stayed in town this weekend since Dad was on-call.  She kept busy by attending the St. John's farmer's market, eating sausage and dancing polka at the Polish Festival, cheering Mom and Dad on at The Battle at Barlow cyclocross race, and watching the annual "bedding down of the swifts" at Chapman School with Sallyanne.

Every year, as the Vaux's swifts migrate through the Portland area, they roost in the Chapman School chimney.  For several evenings, it's quite an event as hundreds of thousands of birds fly through the sky and dive in to the chimney.  Hazel was enthralled.

This picture does not do justice to what the scene really looks like.

In between bouts of entertaining other spectators with her cuteness, Hazel stared at the swifts.

Mom and Hazel apparently cock their heads at the exact same angle.

Hazel quickly learned to say "Bird!"  Her language development has been fast and furious these days, though most of her words are conspicuously missing the last syllable, so "Bird!" sounds a lot like "Bir!"

Hazel in the Tieton

Just after our last post, we discovered these fantastic photos from Joe.  In the above picture, Hazel is indeed OK.  Yup.  She was just that tired.  Hazel had been VERY busy at the bottom of the cliff belaying, trying to eat rocks and enjoying the view.
Hazel loves hanging out with all of her friends (below) and gladly rode back to the top of the cliff on Sunday so she could gaze across the recently charred landscape and appreciate the mountains she'll grow up camping in.

And no, Joe and Ky, you can't keep her.

Hazel Goes Rock Climbing, Again

Hazel is healthy again after a bought of the coughs and sniffles and she decided to celebrate with her family by going camping and rock climbing.  Hazel wanted to bring along some friends too, so Ky and Joe and Drew came along.  We went to the Tieton River Gorge outside of Yakima to go rock climbing.
Hazel likes to sleep in the trailer.  Mom and dad bundled her up for winter even though it never got below freezing.  She woke up Saturday morning and wanted to read a book with mommy right away, even though she was still sleepy.
Hazel also spent lots of time playing in the dirt in the campground between climbing sessions.  Hazel loves to camp, and this was a great way to celebrate the end of summer.

What babies do when they have to stay home with croup

More multi-generational fun

Hazel and her parents are of the same mind: weekends are for playing.  Fortunately, her grandparents most definitely agree.  Hazel took her grandparents on a 5-mile hike to Punch Bowl Falls in the Columbia River Gorge.

Mom and Hazel practice looking alike (not that they really have to practice).

After a morning on the trail, Hazel directed everyone to Hood River for a little windsurf and kitesurf-watching action.

She was so inspired, she wanted to walk all around the park.

Visit from the grandparents

Hazel's Colorado grandparents came for a visit and she has been busy showing them what's cool around these parts.

She started off with St. John's Park, where she was more than happy showing off her ability to climb up and down stairs.

Of course, Hazel had to take her grandparents to sushi at Mio Sushi.  Hazel loves sushi.  So do her grandparents and her parents.

On Saturday, it was off to the races for Pain on the Peak, the first cyclocross race of the year.

Mom and Dad suffered.  Hazel and her grandparents hung out in the sun and heckled.

Oregon State Fair

To celebrate the last REAL day of summer before Mom had to go back to school, Mom took Hazel to the Oregon State Fair.  There, they may not have ridden any heart-stopping rides, but they did partake in all the fair had to offer a 13-month-old.

Hazel was alternately fascinated and scared by the clown show.

She took little interest in the junior rodeo, instead eyeing the bleacher stairs with a keen sense of curiosity...

...and within seconds she had escaped to climb the stairs over and over and over again, completely covering herself with rodeo dust in the process.

After her adventure in arena stairs, Hazel was hungry and therefore partook in a state fair rite of passage: the corndog.

She then covered herself in curly fries because Summer '09 only happens once and why not?  We're at the State Fair!
